Introducing CANVASThe Canvas learning management system (LMS) is the central tool of Nuku, which replaced Blackboard Learn in November 2022.

We chose Canvas after a year of work and input from over 80 people across Te Herenga Waka to determine the requirements for our future learning platform. Some of the drivers behind these requirements included the following needs:
Choosing an LMS is a long-term commitment, and our testers judged that Canvas provided the best opportunities and flexibility to continue to develop and grow our learning platform into the future.
Internationally, Canvas is the largest and fastest growing LMS by market share of new LMS implementations. Closer to home, we have heard overwhelmingly positive things from colleagues at institutions in New Zealand and Australia who have already migrated to Canvas from other systems. We are confident that Canvas is the right LMS for our platform, too.
- improved student experience with accessibility allowing inclusivity and mobility
- a user interface that is engaging and easy to use for all users
- a system that is adaptable and configurable to allow us to develop our own functionality and grow our capabilities, and
- having more options for how courses can be delivered and accessed by a greater variety of students, collaborators and public interests for courses such as professional development, MOOCs, micro-credentials and transnational offerings.
